Answer: Custard cried for a nice safe cage because he loved peace, comfort, and safety rather than boasting or fighting. Despite having huge sharp teeth, spikes, scales, and a fiery appearance, he was meek and easily frightened, which led Belinda and the other pets to mockingly label him as the “cowardly dragon”.

But Custard jumped up heroically, snorted like an engine, clashed his tail like iron chains, attacked the pirate like a robin catching a worm, and bravely swallowed the pirate whole, saving everyone.
