The Sermon at Benares

(Thinking about the Text)

  1. When her son dies, Kisa Gotami goes from house to house. What does she ask for? Does she get it? Why not?

Answer: When her son died, Kisa Gotami carried the dead child from house to house asking for medicine that could cure him and bring him back to life. She did not get it because her son was already dead, and no medicine on earth can restore life to the dead. The neighbours pitied her and thought she had lost her mind in overwhelming grief.

  1. Kisa Gotami again goes from house to house after she speaks with the Buddha. What does she ask for, the second time around? Does she get it? Why not?

Answer: The second time, Kisa Gotami went from house to house asking for a handful of mustard seeds from a household where no one had ever lost a child, husband, parent, or friend. She did not get it because there was not a single house where death had not touched some beloved family member. As people lamented, “The living are few, but the dead are many.”

  1. What does Kisa Gotami understand the second time that she failed to understand the first time? Was this what the Buddha wanted her to understand?

Answer: The second time, sitting wearily by the roadside and watching the city lights flicker and extinguish into the dark night, Kisa Gotami understood that death is the inevitable and universal law of nature common to all mortals. She realized that she had been selfish in her personal grief. Yes, this profound truth about the universality of death and the necessity of rising above selfish attachment was precisely what the Buddha wanted her to understand through her own experience.

  1. Why do you think Kisa Gotami understood this only the second time? In what way did the Buddha change her understanding?

Answer: In the beginning, Kisa Gotami was blinded by motherly grief and denial of her son’s death. Instead of delivering a theoretical lecture, the Buddha wisely gave her an experiential task: to find mustard seeds from a house untouched by death. When she visited every house and found bereavement everywhere, she personally witnessed that suffering and death belong to all humanity. The Buddha transformed her understanding from selfish personal sorrow to universal spiritual acceptance.

  1. How do you usually understand the idea of ‘selfishness’? Do you agree with Kisa Gotami that she was being ‘selfish in her grief ‘?

Answer: Selfishness usually means being excessively concerned only with one’s own desires, comfort, and benefits without caring for others. In Kisa Gotami’s case, she called herself ‘selfish’ because she was so consumed by her personal loss that she forgot that death and suffering are common to every human being, and she was desperately wishing for her dead son to come back to life in violation of nature’s universal law. While her grief was natural for a loving mother, on a spiritual level, desiring an exception to universal mortality was an act of personal attachment and selfishness.
