Part III: Tea from Assam
What are the two popular legends about the discovery of tea described by Rajvir?
Answer:
Chinese Legend: A Chinese Emperor always boiled water before drinking. One day, a few leaves from the burning twigs under the pot accidentally fell into the boiling water, imparting a delicious flavor. These were said to be tea leaves.
Indian Legend: Bodhidharma, an ancient Buddhist ascetic, cut off his eyelids because he felt sleepy during meditation. Ten tea plants sprouted from his eyelids. The leaves of these plants, when boiled in hot water and drunk, banished sleep.
What facts about tea history and tea production in Assam did Rajvir share?
Answer: Rajvir shared that over eighty crore cups of tea are consumed daily across the world. Tea was first drunk in China around 2700 B.C., and words like ‘chai’ and ‘chini’ originated from Chinese. Tea reached Europe in the sixteenth century, where it was initially used as medicine. Assam has the largest concentration of tea plantations in the world. The second-flush (sprouting period) from May to July yields the highest quality tea.
